E-waste - Includes most electronics that can be recycled such as; computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, cell phones and fax machines. The state of California has passed the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 that places requirements on manufacturers to provide consumer information on ways to recycle these items and has set a fee to be collected from consumers at the retail point of sale. Detailed information on this program can be viewed at eRecycle.org.
It is illegal to dispose of most covered electronic devices with regular municipal waste due to the hazardous materials they contain. E-Waste can be taken to the John Smith Road Landfill during regular business hours; Monday-Friday 8-4 pm and Saturday-Sunday 9-3 pm at NO CHARGE.

Assembly Bill 939
This mandate is known as AB 939 and requires every city and county in the state of California to reduce its waste by 50% by the year 2000 and beyond. Our community has not met that goal. We are currently subject to $10,000/day fines if we do not demonstrate “good faith efforts” toward diverting a greater percentage of our waste from the landfill. All San Benito County residents are being asked to reduce the amount of waste generated at home and at work by Reducing the amount of materials we buy and buying items with less packaging, Reusing materials whenever possible instead of buying new, and Recycling items through curbside and commercial recycling programs. For more ideas to reduce the amount of waste you generate, contact the San Benito County Integrated Waste Management Regional Agency at (831) 636-4110.
